Abondance

2022 / Milo Rivard / digital & 16mm / 5 min

The movements of water merge with those of dance, moving the videographer who finally sees themselves reflected in it.

The writing of the film mainly took place during the editing process. I worked with images that offered many opportunities, such as the comparison between human movements and the movements of water, as well as the contrast between the city and nature. This process ultimately led me to follow what resonated with me, the filmmaker, as I explored the intimate process of creating a film that represents my own emotional currents. I also wanted to leave space for the viewers to meditate on their own, remaining primarily contemplative.

This film was presented at the Image+nation festival in 2022, where I participated in a Q&A with other filmmakers. In addition to editing, I took on the roles of director and co-director of photography.

Aurelia

A film that was stimulating to shape in the editing process. The goal was to create a sensory atmosphere that is unsettling and dense. It's through slowness that we manage to delve into the details of the image and sound, which are calm but extremely uncomfortable. With the director, we wanted to play with this discomfort; there is always a tension that something is not right.

The film won the award for Best Local Film at the Montreal International Film Festival in 2020. In addition to my role as an editor, I took on the role of director of photography.

Aurelia's world is not as perfect as it seems. Lost in the darkness, Sophie sets out to search for her parents who mysteriously disappeared from their home.

Re/garde is a capture of a moment in life through memories with loved ones, quietly revealing their way of being.

2019 / Milo Rivard / digital / 12 min

For the editing of this film, I wanted to structure the moments of connection with my loved ones into a realistic routine from one weekend to the next. The fluid, calm, and contemplative rhythm allows for an appreciation of the mannerisms of my loved ones in the smallest details. By cutting the dialogue and slowing down the image, I aimed to anchor the sensory experience of ambient sounds and simulate a pause to simply appreciate. The leitmotif of dance allowed for the expression of the joy surrounding these encounters.

In taking on all the roles from filming to editing, I wanted to extend the important moments of this part of my life, to preserve and reflect on them, while leaving room for interpretation by the viewer.

Adara

Adara, unwitting pyromaniac, struggles to resist her desires.

The editing of this film allows us to delve into the melancholic interiority of a pyromaniac who holds herself back from acting. We take the time to feel the duality with water, which desires to extinguish the fire. In the pursuit of conveying everything visually, and even more so auditorily, we were able to explore Adara's inner space, expanding our access to her sadness in a symbolic way. Even though it is an internal struggle, we gently let ourselves go into her conflicts with various sensory experiences.

For our first university project, my teammates and I made this film with limitations in film and sound recording, which allowed us to tell the story without dialogue. I took on the role of co-director of photography: Shooting with a Bolex 16mm camera, we were creative and resourceful. During the retrospective of the year's projects, we won the award for Best Cinematography.
